At Oakwood Primary School our two Reception classes operate within an open plan environment. Each class has its own carpet and focus group work area. The shared area is well organised into learning zones, which includes a purpose built role play area that changes frequently, art, ICT, writing, construction, sand areas and an inviting book corner.
We benefit from a beautiful wooded walkway behind the school which allows for many outdoor activities, welly walks and searching for wildlife. Year R have two separate playground areas which are carefully planned for use each day. From bikes and scooters to building with larger construction, our children enjoy taking their learning outside.
Explore and Discover time in Year R is an essential part of the day. It is an opportunity for our inquisitive learners to become more independent, selective and evaluative of their choices. Our staff observe, support and extend the learning through careful questioning and modelling.
We focus on how children learn and work to instill the Characteristics of Learning. Each week we introduce a new Learning Characteristic which link with three exciting role-models; Captian Can-Do, Captain Think and Captain Explore. Children are encouraged to grow to become motivated, engaged and active learners who can think critically.
We offer exciting and inspiring topics which reflect the children’s interests and needs. Continuous assessment for learning feeds directly into our provision for the children to ensure that we are continually challenging, stimulating and stretching each child so that they can reach their next step.
