Uniform
We expect all children who come to Oakwood Primary School to wear our uniform.
Children have a right to be safe in school, to a good education, and to not be judged on the clothes that they wear.
Uniform promotes a sense of belonging to Team Oakwood and encourages children to take pride in themselves and the school. It reduces the distinction between cheaper and more expensive clothes and means children can focus on their learning when they come to school, not what other people are wearing or what the latest fashions are.
Our rules about jewellery uphold children’s right to be safe and are recommended by the PE and Games advisors.
Most of our uniform is generic, unbranded clothing which you can get extremely cheaply from supermarkets. All of our uniform and PE kit is available through our uniform provider. For PE kit, you can choose plain or logo PE T-Shirts and tracksuit tops.
(*If your child is eligible for pupil premium, your child may be eligible for a complimentary item of uniform. Please ask in the office.)

Oakwood Uniform
We are really proud of our uniform and expect all children to wear it.
Thank you to all parents who make sure their children are in the proper Oakwood uniform.
Our day-to-day uniform comprises the following items:

PE Kit
Please note:
PE Tops should be in House Colours
Colder weather PE kit is a plain black tracksuit.
All PE kit items except shoes are available in most supermarkets and through our uniform provider – if buying through them you can opt to have plain or logo t-shirts and black tracksuit tops at checkout.
Trainers or plimsolls should be worn for PE.
Earrings (studs only) must be removed for PE, or covered with appropriate tape if unable to be removed. Long hair must be tied back for PE.
Shoes and Accessories
Shoes and Boots
We expect all children to wear black, practical “school” shoes.
These are the type of shoes most widely available, and they are also available at reasonable cost from supermarkets and shoe “warehouses”.
It is very important that children wear proper shoes to school to protect their feet. We know that some school shoes more closely resemble trainers. So long as they are plain, black and unbranded, these are allowed.
Trainers are needed as part of PE kit.
Sandals in the summer
In the summer term, we get lots of questions about sandals. Children can wear either black, brown or white sandals, but they must be flat, have a back and protect the feet. Flip flops are not allowed.

Boots in the winter
During the winter, we get lots of questions about boots. Children can wear either black or brown ankle boots, but they must be plain and flat. Knee-high boots, including Ugg-style boots, are not appropriate for school and are not allowed. Hi-top trainer boots are also not allowed.

Jewellery and Personal Belongings
Jewellery
Our rules about jewellery and other personal belongings are primarily about safety.
If children have their ears pierced, only one pair of studs may be worn. Earrings should not be worn on PE days but if your child is unable to remove them, please provide suitable medical tape to cover them.
We follow Southampton City Council’s guidance on this issue strictly.
Wrist watches are allowed in school. Watches for school wear should not be expensive, nor should they have game or camera functions.
No other jewellery is allowed for school wear.
We can’t take responsibility for the loss or damage of jewellery or any other personal property.
Toys, games and other personal belongings
It is not appropriate for children to bring in toys or games, however small, unless invited to do so for a special reason, by the classteacher. Please discourage your child from bringing such items into school, unless s/he has been particularly asked to do so.
Mobile Phones
Mobile phones are not allowed in our school. We understand that some of our older children walk to and from school without a parent, and therefore carry phones for safety. These must be handed in to the office to be kept during the day. Parents must use the application form for permission to bring phones to school. We will not take responsibility for the loss or damage of any property.
Hair
Haircuts and colours
We do not expect children to come to school with extreme haircuts or colours.
Examples of haircuts not permitted include: tram lines or equivalent, shapes, logos or words shaved into hair. We don’t allow unnatural hair colours. When joining the school, parents and carers are expected to fully support this policy at all times.
Long hair should be tied back at all times and short hair in a suitable style for school.
Hair Accessories
These should be plain and functional, and not worn for fashion purposes. Large or decorative hairbands are not allowed. Large bows and novelty headbands or headbands with accessories are also not allowed.
