PE at Oakwood

At Oakwood, we follow the National Curriculum guidelines to develop a rich physical education curriculum that encourages teamwork, respect, sportsmanship and variety. We aim to inspire children to push themselves to achieve new personal bests across a range of sporting skills and games. Our goal is to help children build a positive mindset and attitude towards sports and exercise. At Oakwood, we encourage children to lead active and healthy lifestyles, including embracing and maintaining the city-wide ‘Healthy High 5’ scheme.

Within our provision, our Oakwood athletes are taught to be concerned with their own and others’ safety in all activities undertaken. Our curriculum is delivered by class teachers and half of the curriculum is taught through Testlands, an external company. Areas covered throughout the children’s time in school include both individual and team games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, strike and field as well as outdoor adventure activities in summer. Children in year 2 and 5 will participate in swimming lessons as part of their curriculum.

Here at Oakwood we build on the children’s pride and sportsmanship skills through healthy competition. Across the school children will take part in whole school intra- and inter- house competitions, sports days and external competitions. Children are also offered the opportunity to take part in after-school clubs to support strengthening their physical education beyond the school day.

Children have 2 hours of taught PE per week. One hour is delivered by their class teacher, and the other is taught by sports coaches from Testlands Multisport Coaching.

On top of taught PE lessons, we have a strong focus on health and well-being across the curriculum. This includes activities such as the Golden Mile and Fitness Mornings before school.
