Maths
“The beauty of mathematics only shows itself to more patient followers. It’s not only the question, but the way you try to solve it…”
(Maryam Mirzakhani, Mathematician)
Maths Intent
At Oakwood we recognise that mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for everyday life skills and most jobs. Therefore, it is our intent to provide a high-quality mathematics education that provides a foundation for understanding the world and the ability to reason mathematically. We feel it is also important that children develop an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
All children are taught to become fluent in the procedures that give them the ability to solve problems with increasing complexity and sophistication. Varied and frequent practice will provide them with a deeper understanding of concepts being taught and confidence to use their mathematical skills to solve problems that they will come across in their adult life. They will be given regular opportunities to develop their logical reasoning: following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
Our Teaching Plan
We aim to develop a mastery approach to mathematics, and use the White Rose Maths scheme as a basis for our planning, progression and assessment.
Basic Skills Maths Awards
Learn about our Basic Skills Maths Awards scheme
It starts off with basic number skills and progresses through to a mastery of a range of complex mental maths and challenges! Look out for children wearing their award badges!
Our Oakwood Maths Basic Skills Logs Journey outlines the journey children take through the awards.
For our Bronze and Silver logs, you can also watch videos which show how the children are tested!
