Below is an overview of the curriculum for each year group (Years 1-6).

YR curriculum information can be found on the main YR page.

Art Intent

At Oakwood Primary School our intention is to provide an Art Curriculum which: enables children to explore their imagination; fosters their originality; provokes their curiosity in the world around them and allows them to be courageous in the choices they make. We aim to give pupils the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art in visual or tactile forms. We will help pupils develop lively, enquiring minds, be problem solvers and, as they progress, encourage them to think critically and make informed responses to their own work and that of others.  The Art Curriculum at Oakwood also reflects our school value of empathy through the exploration and celebration of similarities and differences between peoples, places, and cultures.

Throughout the curriculum children will be given opportunities:

  • To learn about materials and techniques used by artists
  • To learn about the world of art, craft and design.
  • To recognise the achievement of artists, designers and craftspeople, from many different times.
  • To show pride in their own achievements which are regularly celebrated in classrooms, shared areas and on the school blog.

We aim to raise the standards of the pupils’ abilities in specific art and craft skills such as:

  • Cutting
  • Joining
  • Drawing
  • Sculpture
  • Architectural Design
  • Evaluating
  • Use of sketchbooks

We aim to increase the opportunities for the children to experience:

  • Art from different cultures
  • Visits to art galleries and exhibitions
  • Using different materials and techniques
  • Art within our community
